The Cave you fear to enter holds the treasure that you seek ~ Joseph Campbell
We are wired as humans to strive to be better. We all like it when we do things well. When we do, we receive praise, recognition, and in general, have great interpersonal exchanges with people who we value. These experiences give us self worth because the fit in with our desired self image.
Everyone also has experiences that conflict with their desired concept of self. These are the not quite so positive attributes in our nature, which reveal our less than desirable characteristics. As a result we often bury them where they sleep safely in the unconscious remaining untouched until they are triggered creating a shadow self. The shadow is unknown to us, but often we perceive her in our projected character flaws of others.
These shadow aspects of ourselves often appear when we are afraid, in scarcity, and fearful of abandonment, and guess what? Everyone has them, for you cannot have light without darkness. Carl Jung once said “A man who is unconscious of himself acts in a blind, instinctive way.” A Hero’s Journey often involves traveling into the unknown, a relative place of uncertainty. Learning how to relate with our fiery shadow, and developing a deepening connection to those hidden attributes allows us to practice love and acceptance for those parts of us that feel vulnerable, needy, jealous or fearful. As an added benefit of cultivating an integrated and harmonious relationship with our shadow self, we create more loving relationships as we are able to contain our projected judgments on family, friends, and others.
Please join me in a day of embarking on your Hero’s Journey to embracing your shadow self. Using visioning meditations, creative self-exploration, Karuna Reiki, and ritual, you will meet your shadow, gain clarity about how (s) he is affecting your life, heal, reconcile and integrate shadow aspects, and develop heart centered ways of relating to shadow by aligning with a personal daily ritual or practice.
