Welcome to The Foundations of Psychopomp Guest Lecture Series

This month we honored to welcome Summer Estes & Samantha DiRosa

In a world where Mother Earth and all beings—human and non-human—bear the wounds of past and present actions, grief emerges as the profound “keynote” of our era. This shared sorrow runs deep, touching both our collective consciousness and our individual lives.

In our time together, we’ll explore grief as a vital force seeking expression within us and those we support. We’ll briefly examine Francis Weller’s Five Gates of Grief to identify the different ways grief manifests. We’ll also explore common obstacles that cause us to resist or become stuck in grief, and engage in practices designed to “warm” grief for those feeling numb or disconnected, as well as “titrating” practices for those who may feel overwhelmed by sorrow. Together, we’ll engage in ritual practice to honor our grief while inviting the greater mystery that surrounds and supports us.

Allowing grief to flow, we enter a sacred space where the authenticity of our hearts can be experienced. Meeting ourselves and others exactly where we are in grief, and bearing witness to our broken hearts, offers potent medicine so deeply needed in our time.

About The Facilitators

Summer Estes MA, LCMHC, is a licensed psychotherapist, Enneagram teacher, retreat facilitator, and the founder of Embodied Intelligence. She has a deep passion for inner work that weaves together perennial wisdom, somatic and mindfulness practices, and ritual arts. Inspired by the teachings of Francis Weller, author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow, she trained  in his approach. Studying under Malidoma Somé and Dr. Daniel Foor has further enriched her ethical framework and deepened her commitment to the sacred journey of grief work.   Summer believes grief tending  and ritual holds potent medicine for the hope and care of all creation.  Currently, she resides in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, on the ancestral lands of the Keyauwee and Saura Peoples, with her husband, three children, and 3 fur babies. She has been working in the healing arts for over 19 years.

Samantha DiRosa, MFA, RYT, is a university art professor, yoga instructor, ritualist, and budding art therapist based in Greensboro, North Carolina.  She brings 20 years of facilitation and teaching experience in the realm of higher-education, alongside an artist’s sensitivity and depth of insight, to her work with groups.  Having trained with Francis Weller, author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow, and Joanna Macy, author of Active Hope, she believes in the power of ritual and ceremony to transmute sorrow and loss into the healing of individuals, communities, and the Earth.  Samantha lives with her daughter and her pack of non-human companions in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, the occupied lands of the Keyauwee and Saura Peoples. When she is not teaching, she maintains a small private coaching / consulting practice and spends time connecting with her Celtic and Sicilian ancestral roots.
